What’s in a name?
Schunemunk Mountain is the highest mountain in Orange County, New York, with a 1,664-foot summit. Schunemunk is of Algonquin origin meaning “excellent fireplace.” The name was given to a village at the northern end of the mountain where a tribe once lived. It is a small part of the Appalachian Mountain range and serves as an incredible scenic backdrop for the sculptures on the property of Storm King Art Center.
There are many places to walk and hike but the Trestle Tail in particular is only 1.5 miles from the Caldwell House making it a great option for our guests. The white-blazed Trestle Trail is a 1.7-mile climb to the western ridge of the mountain. A small amount of effort will be rewarded with views of SkyTop Tower in the Mohonk Preserve and the Catskills. If you still have some gas left in the tank once you have reached the summit, you can continue on a looped path for approximately 8 to 12 miles that traverses the entire mountain top with sweeping views in every direction.
It’s a short road walk on the white-blazed trail from the parking lot towards the railroad trestle. Just before the trestle the white trail turns right into the woods. There are a couple of spots along the way as you climb, to get different views of the trestle. Keep an eye out for unmarked trails that lead to an overlook with a bench (good place to get a great picture!).
