Hike on the Iconic Appalachian Trail in Bear Mountain State Park

Are you in need of a restart? Like, push the start over button? This year has thrown so many curve balls our way, but the bottom line is that there is always a silver lining. For us, we still have our bed & breakfast, we are still greeting guests, and we still get to look out our front door and see the beauty of the Hudson Valley. A great way to reboot and refresh is to get out on a trail and you can hop right on the Appalachian Trail not far from our home.

Hiking is often exhausting but always rewarding! Not only does it get your endorphins and “feel good” emotions stirring, there is something magical about being out in nature where the busyness of life can be forgotten for an hour or two. Fall is simply stunning in the Hudson Valley and if you have yet to visit us during this season, you are missing out! The sweeping foliage on fire with color across the valley is a reason so many travel our way during the fall. Hiking is a favorite outdoor activity for locals and guests alike and as we mentioned above, the famous Appalachian Trail can be accessed just over 20 minutes from our bed & breakfast.

For hiking newbies out there, the Appalachian Trail is on many a hiker’s bucket list. It is a 2,180-mile footpath along ridges and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in northern Georgia. The trail passes through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia. Yes, there are hikers who hike the entire length of the trail in one season! For our guests in for a mid-week or weekend stay, you can experience just a section of it from Bear Mountain State Park. The section of the trail accessed here is actually the first stretch of the trail that was completed in 1923. You can start your trek at the Bear Mountain Recreation Area and then head southbound to the summit of Bear Mountain. Bring a camera so you can capture the incredible views along the way from various overlooks. If you are up for a challenge, you can take the trail all the way to Harriman State Park and back, which offers hikers a 13.5-mile roundtrip adventure.
