5 Must-See Spots at Minnewaska State Park Preserve

You’re missing out if you love the outdoors and have never visited Minnewaska State Park Preserve. This preserve should be at the top of your list of Hudson Valley things to do. It’s in Kerhonkson, New York, and offers waterfalls, scenic trails, and stunning viewpoints, making it one of the region’s top hiking destinations.

There are endless opportunities to adventure here, especially considering you’ll have 23,000 acres of preserved land to explore. But if your time is limited and you’re just checking things out, these five spots are absolute must-sees.

1. Awosting Falls

Few places capture the beauty of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, like Awosting Falls. This 60-foot waterfall cascades into a tranquil pool, making it one of the park’s most iconic sights and the perfect place to snap a picture.

The best part? It’s easy to reach. A short, well-maintained trail leads from the lower parking area to the base of the falls, and it’s accessible for all fitness levels.

Visit after heavy rain or spring when the water flow is most potent. Even in winter, frozen formations around the falls create a magical scene. The sound of rushing water, the cool mist, and the lush greenery make this a perfect spot for a quiet nature moment.

2. Lake Minnewaska

Lake Minnewaska is one of the park’s crown jewels, and for good reason! Crystal-clear waters contrast with steep, rocky cliffs. It’s positively gorgeous. So, if you’ve got an eye for photography, bring your camera along.

This part of the park is also fantastic for picnics, peaceful walks, a refreshing swim, and other fun activities during warmer months.

The well-groomed trail around the lake makes for a leisurely, scenic stroll. On a sunny day, the water glistens like glass, reflecting the surrounding trees and sky. Several trails connect from this point for those looking to venture beyond the lake. Unwind by the shore or hike to an overlook. Either way, Lake Minnewaska is a highlight of the Preserve.

3. Sam’s Point

We also recommend visiting Sam’s Point. It’s the place to go for panoramic views of the Hudson Valley. This spot sits at the highest elevation in Minnewaska State Park Preserve. You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of rolling hills, distant mountains, and endless forests.

The moderate hike to Sam’s Point is worth the effort. The trail winds through a rare dwarf pine barren ecosystem — a landscape of short, twisted pines adapted to harsh conditions.

4. Gertrude’s Nose Trail

Do you love a challenge? Many of us do, too! Gertrude’s Nose Trail is one of the best — and most challenging — Minnewaska State Park trails. It’s a rugged 8-mile loop that takes you across rocky terrain, through dense forests, and up to an exposed cliff with sweeping views of the valley below.

A word of caution. The trail is demanding, with steep inclines and rocky paths, but the payoff is incredible. The viewpoint at Gertrude’s Nose is one of the most dramatic in the park. You’ll get unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape.

5. Castle Point

Castle Point is a great alternative if you’re looking for stunning views without the difficulty of Gertrude’s Nose. This scenic overlook offers some of the best vistas in Minnewaska State Park Preserve — and the trail to reach it is much more forgiving.

The Castle Point Carriage Road is a broad, well-maintained trail gradually ascending to the viewpoint. You’ll pass through peaceful forests alongside dramatic rock formations and scenic overlooks. However, once you reach the top, the dramatic views of rolling hills and shimmering lakes are breathtaking and picture-perfect.
