Fun Fall Activities
Leaf peeping: These are just fancy words for fall color hunting! A truly classic autumn activity for many and an afternoon drive admiring the beauty that nature brings us is a great way to spend the day. Hudson Valley foliage is some of the best in the country. Usually starting in mid-September, the colors begin to pop with peak time being the middle of October, and really any scenic road will take you past picture worthy views. Click here for a list of fall foliage spots where you are guaranteed to get some fantastic views. Another view point to see fall colors is from the water! The River Rose is an authentic Mississippi paddle wheeler that offers a variety of cruises offered throughout the year. One of the most popular though is their narrated fall foliage sight-seeing tour. This excursion begins in Newburgh, which is a short 20-minute drive down 94 towards the Hudson River.
Minnewaska State Park: The outdoors landscape of the Hudson Valley is one of the reasons it is a bucket list vacation destination. Minnewaska State Park is one spot to visit during the fall for great views of the fall colors. This natural area, situated on the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain ridge, includes more than 23,000 acres of forest. There are 50 miles of paths to choose from for biking, hiking, and walking and there is a beautiful lake surrounded by trees on fire with color.
Ashokan Reservoir: We talked about this special place in a recent blog post. The Ashokan Reservoir is actually a major source of water for New York City. It’s worth mentioning again because it’s a great place to visit during the fall! The promenade stretches 2.8 miles along the shore of the reservoir and you can walk along a path at the top of the dam. The backdrop of the Catskill Mountains brightly colored in hues of red, orange and yellow offers a stunning place to take some pictures!
Apple Picking: For apple lovers out there, there is some fantastic apple picking in the Hudson Valley! It’s so fun to head out to a local orchard and pick them fresh off the tree! During your stay with us you can follow the Warwick Valley Apple Trail. It’s a great way to see the beautiful scenery of the area and enjoy the bounty that the local farmers have to offer. The Warwick Apple Trail will take you to six different orchards in and around Warwick, NY, which is just a half-hour from our bed and breakfast. At the end of it all, you’ll have all you need to go home and make apple cake, apple pie, apple donuts, apple muffins…and anything else apple that your family loves!
Enjoy the the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze: This is a fantastic outing the whole family will enjoy! It’s held at Van Cortland Manor, an historic home in Croton-on-Hudson. The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is the coolest Halloween event with more than 7,000 intricately carved, glowing pumpkins. This one of a kind event will take place through November 21st and you have to purchase tickets in advance. New for 2021, check out the impressive New York City skyline’s pumpkin treatment and take a stroll under the sea in their immersive river display. It’s an event you don’t want to miss!
