7 Best Things to Do in the Fall in the Hudson Valley

Autumn is one of our favorite seasons here. The best things to do in the fall are usually the simplest: crisp air, beautiful views, and time to slow down together.

We watch the season unfold every year at Caldwell House. Guests head out after breakfast with hiking shoes, orchard plans, and one last suggestion from us.

Planning early gives you more choices for rooms, dinner reservations, and peak color weekends. Check our availability while planning your Hudson Valley weekend getaway, then book your favorite room. We’re always happy to help with the details.

1. Wander Through Storm King Art Center

Storm King Art Center is one of the easiest outings from Caldwell House. It’s only about five minutes away, so you won’t spend half the day getting there. You can wander through 500 outdoor acres filled with monumental sculptures, rolling fields, wooded paths, and gorgeous Hudson Valley views.

Give yourself a few hours, but don’t feel like you need to see everything. A slower visit leaves time to return, freshen up, and enjoy your evening. Comfortable shoes help with those hills. And remember, Storm King stays open through November 30, then closes for winter.

2. Watch Glass Artists Work in Beacon

We often send guests to Hudson Beach Glass when they want something creative between outdoor plans. It’s fun. It’s unique. And it’s perfect for couples looking for something new to try.

You can watch artists shape molten glass, browse the gallery, or — our favorite — try a hands-on experience. During the holiday season, you can even make glass ornaments. It’s a fun option among the many fall activities that won’t take over your whole day.

3. Chase Fall Color by Road or Trail

Route 218 along Storm King Mountain is one of our favorite scenic drives. The Hudson River views make the short ride toward Cornwall or West Point feel special.

Couples ready for an outdoor adventure can head to Minnewaska State Park Preserve. We like it because you can choose a trail that matches your mood and energy:

  • Awosting Falls for a shorter walk and waterfall views
  • Castle Point for carriage roads and wide-open scenery
  • Gertrude’s Nose for a longer hike with dramatic overlooks
  • Sam’s Point for cliffs, dwarf pine barrens, and ridge views

Check current parking and access details before leaving, especially during busy autumn weekends. Hudson Valley fall foliage often reaches its peak color around mid-October, though weather can shift the timing a bit. Ask us at breakfast what guests saw the day before. We love helping you find the best color without sending you on a wild goose chase.

4. Pick Apples Along the Warwick Valley Apple Trail

Apple picking is a tradition that never gets old and is perfect for all ages. Orange County makes it easy with orchards, farm markets, cider, pumpkins, and baked treats nearby.

The Warwick Valley Apple Trail begins about 30 minutes from Caldwell House and connects several family farms.

Masker Orchards lets you drive into the orchard, which comes in handy as your apple bag gets heavy. Apple Ridge Orchards and Ochs Orchard are lovely choices, too. Each offers a slightly different mix of fruit, scenery, and farm-market finds.

Start early on weekends for easier parking and a calmer visit. Wear shoes that can handle damp grass and a little orchard mud. Then stop for cider doughnuts or pumpkins on the way back. Somehow, those treats always taste better once you’re settled at the inn.

5. Slow Down at a Local Winery

Brotherhood Winery sits about five minutes away in Washingtonville. Its historic cellars make a cool fall afternoon feel even cozier.

Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery covers more than 120 acres of orchards and gardens. It also produces Doc’s Cider, so couples with different tastes have plenty of choices.

Several wineries sit within 30 minutes of Caldwell House. We usually suggest choosing one or two instead of trying to fit in too much. Take your time, enjoy the setting, and leave room for an easy return before dinner.

6. Join a Fall Festival or Oktoberfest

Fall festivals bring together everything people love about the season: local food, music, handmade goods, cider, and changing leaves. Dates shift yearly, so check the current calendar before choosing your weekend.

Oktoberfest celebrations also pop up across the Hudson Valley. They’re a fantastic way to enjoy seasonal food, local beer, and a lively afternoon together. Pick one main event, then leave room for farm stands or unexpected stops.

7. Taste Local Beer, Spirits, and Food

Our guide to Hudson Valley breweries and distilleries can help you plan a simple route around craft beer, cider, and locally made spirits. Pair one or two stops with a scenic drive. You’ll enjoy the day more and still have energy for dinner.

The best restaurants near us get busy during foliage season, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. However, we still have a few favorites we recommend.

Blu Pointe pairs Hudson River views with a polished dinner. Bella Luna serves Italian favorites nearby when you want something warm and relaxed.

Loughran’s Irish Pub sits right next door to Caldwell House. Walk over for a casual meal and a good pint without getting back into the car.
