Another perk is the inside scoop you get from B&B owners that know all of the “in’s and out’s” about the area in which you are staying. Caldwell House owners John and Dena love sharing their favorite spots to explore. Sometimes it’s the tucked away spaces that the general public may not know about that contribute to an extra special getaway. The Kowawese Unique Area at Plum Point is just 12 minutes away from our bed and breakfast going east on Route 94 towards the Hudson River. Plum Point is actually the place of the first European settlement in Orange County, NY, which was in 1685. A trading post was set up that operated until 1720. Later on, sand and gravel were quarried there and on a walk through the area you might be able to see some remnants left over from the quarry operations that once occupied the site.

It is an off the beaten path type of spot – perfect for unwinding in the great outdoors. The Hudson River is a cornerstone landmark here in the Hudson Valley and there are many places to get beautiful river views. We like this one because it is close to our home and a great place for our guests to enjoy a day outside. It’s a perfect place whether you want to picnic, throw a frisbee, read a book, catch some sun or just have some quiet reflection. There is a 2,000-foot riverfront and beautiful views of the Hudson gorge. The protruding banks allow for being closer to the Hudson to get in some good fishing if you want to bring your rod and tackle. While a small park, there are some easy hiking trails throughout and places for the kids to play. Kowawese Unique Area at Plum Point is truly a hidden gem and a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful Hudson River Valley.
