Bees & Honey, Cider & Apples Tour in Dutchess County

Right outside the front door of the Caldwell House you can find a myriad of things to do and places to go in every direction. The Storm King Art Center is just minutes away, the Vinum Café at the Brotherhood Winery is a guest favorite just 1.5 miles away, and there are many historic homes to see if you are up for a scenic drive through the countryside of Orange County. Following the Hudson River north about 40 minutes you would find Poughkeepsie, NY and that is the place to catch the Hudson Train Line for the Bees & Honey, Cider & Apples Tour.

This great fall package to Northern Dutchess is filled with farm-fresh goodness. This tour will be taking place October 25-26, 2014 and each day is exactly the same. Owners John and Dena can point you to the closest train station to pick up the Hudson Line that will take you to Poughkeepsie. You will want to arrive at the Poughkeepsie Station at 10:36am, as the Dutchess County Farm Fresh Link shuttle will meet you at the station at 10:55am. Your first stop will be to the historic village of Rhinebeck where you will have two hours to eat lunch, shop, and check out the Farmer’s Market if you are there on Sunday.

The next stop on the tour will be the Montgomery Place Orchards—a place that has been growing apples since the 1760s and how grows 70 varieties. Here you will learn how bees play an important part in the success of an orchard and can try their Hard Apple Cider for a small fee. The last stop will be to Mead Orchards, which is a beautiful fruit orchard and vegetable farm. You will have plenty of time to peruse the market and pick your own apples, squash, or pumpkins. The shuttle will take you back to the train station for a scheduled departure at 5:54. You can purchase your rail and shuttle ticket at any Metro-North station or online through WebTicket. Tours frequently sell out and seats are limited. You will need to reserve your seat on the shuttle at least 48 hours in advance—call 800-445-3131.
