Christmas 2014 – Ice Skating in the Hudson Valley

Did you know that the oldest pair of ice skates date back to around 3000 B.C and were found at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland? The skates themselves were actually made from the leg bones of a large animal! It wasn’t until 1865 when a famous American skater named Jackson Haines an all-metal blade that could be attached to a boot. He was also the first to create the toe-pick, which furthered his fame as he was able to do jumps and fancy moves that had never been seen before.

Ice skating is a wonderful pastime and a great activity to do during the holiday season. Fortunately for those of us who live in or will be visiting the Hudson Valley this season, there are many places where you can improve your skills or even just try for the first time.

If you don’t feel like getting all bundled up to brave the cold, opt for an indoor rink! Ice Time in Newburgh, NY hosts many special events, offers rentals, and has a concession area and game room. McCann Ice Arena in Poughkeepsie, NY can host birthday parties, offers skating lessons, and for $130 you can sign up for the Learn to Skate program, which provides a free pass to practice and a free pair of skates. The Sport-o-Rama in Monsey, NY is a twin rink facility with instructors who have trained Olympic skaters. There is a snack bar, pro shop, and classes available taught by instructors in the Professional Skating Association.

If the beauty of the outdoors is calling your name, then grab your hat, scarf, and mittens and try one of the outdoor rinks in the Valley. Bear Mountain State Park has a wonderful rink just a short drive from The Caldwell House. You can reserve private skate sessions if you desire and there are also sledding hills and cross-country trails nearby. Blue Mountain Reservation in Peekskill, NY has a bring-your-own-skates outdoor rink and the outdoor pond Thomas Bull Memorial Park in Montgomery, NY is a nice place to go (signs will say when it is safe to skate).

A night out skating and then unwinding with a glass of wine or cup of hot chocolate or coffee in front of a crackling fireplace…sounds like a pretty perfect way to spend a day this holiday season. At The Caldwell House Bed & Breakfast you also get the bonus of waking up to a delicious homemade, three-course, gourmet breakfast. What are you waiting for? Don’t let the Christmas season pass you by without enjoying all that the Hudson Valley has to offer.
