It is good to get off the beaten path every once in a while, to refocus and regroup. Make an effort to just enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle that so often distracts and adds to the weariness we can sometimes feel. Taking some time outside to breathe in a bit of what Mother Nature has to offer can be good for the soul! There’s a great place to do this not too far from our bed and breakfast. History and nature abound at Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site.
Stony Point’s History
Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site is just over a half hour drive from us here in Salisbury Mills and a great spot for our guests to enjoy some time outdoors. It is the location of the 1779 Battle of Stony Point during the American Revolutionary War and a designated National Historic Landmark. It actually is the only preserved Revolutionary War battlefield in Rockland County and hosts the oldest lighthouse (built in 1826) in the Hudson Valley. Just a note that the lighthouse is not presently open for tours, as repairs are being made.
Stony Point’s Trail
There is a trailhead at which you can park to then begin a 2-mile loop hike. It is easy and accessible for all ages. It does close at 4pm. Also, keep in mind that due to it being a historic site and a cemetery of Revolutionary War soldiers, dogs are not permitted. The short hike provides guests with some great panoramic views of the Hudson River as well as several points of interest along the way.
Birding at Stony Point
There is a lot of great birding at this site all year long however, during winter, Bald Eagles roost in the trees near the river’s edge so keep your eye out. You might want to bring your phone or camera if you happen across a great shot!
