Relaxing Getaway Ideas in Upstate NY | Escape to Caldwell House

Whether you are looking for a couples’ retreat, family getaway or trip with friends, one thing that has to be part of a vacation is relaxation! This looks different to everyone but the good news is that you’ll find it on an escape to the Caldwell House. Below we’ve got some relaxing getaway ideas all around Upstate NY so you can start planning your next Hudson Valley vacation!

Golf – An afternoon on the green for 9 or 18 holes is a great way to relax for an afternoon! Upstate New York is home to many amazing golf courses, making it easy for our guests to get out and practice their swing. We recommend trying out the West Point Golf Course, Stony Ford, Hickory Hill, Winding Hills, or Mansion Ridge. Each one offers different difficulties, hazards and fairways but all provide spectacular views, lush fairways and immaculate greens. Plus, great pro shops and restaurants too!

On the River – Book a scenic and informative Hudson River cruise. The Pride of the Hudson and The River Rose both offer great sight-seeing cruises. The Pride of the Hudson offers cruises that go rain or shine so you can enjoy the fresh air on the spacious, open sun deck or choose to relax in the main salon that is climate controlled to be as comfortable as possible. It also has huge wrap-around windows so you will not miss out on any of the gorgeous sights if you are inside. You can also take part in sunset cruises and happy hour cruises. The River Rose, based in Newburgh, NY, is an authentic 100-foot New Orleans Paddle Wheeler that was brought over from the Mississippi River. This two-story historic boat once served as a casino boat and now offers cruises for all sorts of occasions with the capacity to hold up to 150 passengers plus crew. On the two-hour narrated cruise, you’ll pass some amazing spots along the river including the Catskill Water Aqueduct, Bannerman’s Island, World’s End, the Village of Cold Spring, and the military academy at West Point.

Garden Tour – The natural landscape across the Hudson Valley is just breathtaking and the beauty is just one reason we welcome so many guests each year. There are numerous gardens to tour, all within an hour of our bed and breakfast. Take some time to tour the Storm King Art Center, the Orange County Arboretum, Downing Park, Boscobel, Stonecrop Garden, Dutch Gardens, Van Cortlandt Manor, and Lyndhurst Mansion. These tranquil gardens offer a place to walk around at your leisure and relax. You’ll find all kinds of features including waterfalls, exotic plants, ponds, rock formations, greenhouses, rose gardens, water gardens, outdoor sculptures, wildflowers, views of the Hudson River and so much more.

Hiking – Some may think, “That’s not relaxing!” but to others, spending time out on a trail in the beautiful Hudson Valley is the perfect way to unwind. Cold Spring is an adorable village just a little over a half hour away from us and near it are some great trails with beautiful views such as the Bull Hill Full Loop, the Breakneck Ridge Hike and the Anthony’s Nose Hike.

Tour a Museum – Take a trip over to Beacon, NY where you can explore Dia:Beacon, one of the largest contemporary art galleries in the country. While in Beacon you can enjoy a romantic meal at Brothers Trattoria and then take in a sunset waterfront view at Scenic Hudson’s Long Dock Park.

Vineyard Tour – Take some time to enjoy the wonderful wines of the Hudson River region. Nestled between the Shawangunk Mountains and the majestic Hudson River lies the 80-mile Shawangunk Wine Trail, a group of 15 diverse wineries. Each winery has its own unique flavor and vibe. You’ll find live music, special events, delicious food, cellar tours, and amazing views.

Whether you choose to relax in the great outdoors or simply stay “at home” at our bed and breakfast, we can promise a weekend getaway to the Caldwell House will be relaxing memorable.
