Founded by the Smiley Family in 1869, this 265-room Victorian castle resort is only 90 miles north of New York City. You’ll find jagged, rocky cliffs hovering over a crystal blue, mountain lake and the Rondout Valley, with the Catskills in the distance. This breathtaking scenery was what inspired Albert Smiley to build a place where visitors could truly rest and be renewed in such a beautiful setting. It is all about the outdoors at this resort and guests can purchase a day pass to take it all in. Go for the day to explore the surrounding renowned hiking trails – there are more than 85 to discover! They range in difficulty from beginner to advanced and it is recommended that you bring a packed meal, bottled water, rain gear, and headlamp. Hiking begins and ends at the parking lot at the Gatehouse and trail passes are available for booking at a first-come-first-serve basis 72-hours in advance of your planned arrival date. Recommended trails include the Bonticou Crag Trail and the Table Rocks Trail. There is a Visitor Center where you can pick up trail maps. Fall is a popular time to visit and the parking areas at the trailheads can fill up quickly so it is best to get there early in the day. Also, note that a hiking pass does not include access to the interior of the house or lake swimming.
After a hike, relax with a cocktail while sitting in a rocking chair overlooking the lake. Then, take some time for a tour around the Victorian gardens, which have won many awards. There are French, German and Italian influences throughout picturesque and romantic grounds. Mohonk is truly a gardener’s dream!
